The Building
Well known as a local landmark the former Methodist Church was built in 1864, during the heyday of the Victorian age. It bears many of the hallmarks of the era and the village, such as polychromic brick work externally and ceramic wall tiles internally. The village clock is also a prominent feature on the frontage.
School Entrance
This doorway brings back happy memories for many village residents who can recall passing through it as children attending Sunday School. The legend above the door confirms this part of the building was built in 1911. The entrance vestibule and hallway leading to the School Hall have recently been decorated and there is a removable access ramp for disabled access.
School Hall
The Old school Hall area is the first to have received a new coat of paint, thanks to a generous donation of paint and decorating materials from the Dulux Decorator Centre and a group of highly motivated volunteers. It is now a light and spacious room with a polished wood floor, ideal for dance, childrens play or exercise. The room is now available for private hire by individuals/families wanting to hold a function or Clubs/Groups needing somewhere to meet or practise.
Youth Area
This room is located on the first floor and was previously designated as a Methodist Youth Centre. It has been out of action for a number of years. The room is 9.2m x 3.9m
It is intented to make this space into an attractive spot for village youngsters to drop-in and meet up with their friends, play pool or darts and get involved with organised youth activities such as drama and art.
There will be soft drinks available and casual seating for chilling-out and maybe even a playstation or two!
The previous Church Area
This is an impressively large area with a beautiful vaulted/exposed beamed ceiling and stained glass/leaded windows. The measurements are 15m x 11.6m at the widest point, 9.9m at the narrowest point.
It is planned to convert this area into a multi-functional space accomodating a coffee shop, mother and toddler play area, village heritage and information displays, art exhibitions, spaces for drama / music performances along with leisure facilities for all age groups at various points throughout the day. This part of the building also houses the working mechanism of the official village clock.
Significant funding is required to undertake the conversion works. This is currently being sought from a variety of grant sources. Once the funds have been secured we will be able to allocate a fixed timescale for completion of this area.
